2013 Cadillac ATS Live Photos: 2012 Detroit Auto Show. Lincoln expects new looks, more power and features like lane-departure alert to inject new life into its 2013 MKS large sedan and MKT crossover.
They also add an adaptive suspension and comfort and sport modes as Lincoln tries to boost sales of the slow-selling models.
The vehicles' styling changes include a subtler version of Lincoln's bow-wave grille. The MKS also adds high-intensity Lincoln headlights, LED taillights and a new hood and front fenders.
Perhaps most significantly, the MKS's power rises to 300 horsepower, and its highway fuel economy gains 3 m.p.g. to 28 m.p.g. The MKT also goes up to 300 horsepower, while its highway fuel economy rises 1 m.p.g. to 25.
The new adaptive suspension automatically monitors the road and vehicle performance for a stiffer or softer ride. The system is standard on the MKS.
Another system allows the driver to choose from comfort, normal and sport settings for the suspension, steering, throttle and transmission.
Both vehicles will continue to come with either front- or all-wheel drive.
Ford is anxious to increase the appeal of its Lincoln luxury brand.
The MKS and MKT facelifts are the first small steps in an ambitious plan to give Lincoln a new model line that can compete with the likes of Audi, Cadillac and Lexus.

Hyundai is on a mission to expand its American market share. And so far, the going's been good for the Korean automaker, which has been taking the fight to its Japanese rivals with increasing ferocity. Now reports indicate that Hyundai-Kia is looking into building a third assembly plant in North America. Only it probably won't be in the United States – like its existing plant in Alabama and the one being built in Georgia – and it won't be in Canada either; sources say the third plant is likely to end up in Mexico.
The reports are apparently substantiated by the Mexican government, which is understandably keen to encourage foreign investment. If and when it goes online – it's targeted for 2013 – the plant could be capable of churning out 150,000 vehicles annually, helping Hyundai quadruple its North American output by 2013. The plant could be used to produce the Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio for North American consumption, but not the Veracruz crossover – which may prove a little confusing, considering that the location Hyundai's looking at is in Veracruz, Mexico.

2012 Honda Pilot to get new gearbox and revised face, Ridgeline adds Sport model. Honda is giving the company's Pilot a mild refresh for 2012. The SUV will ditch its bulky front fascia for a slightly more restrained nose with a three-bar grille replacing the thick-chrome grin of the 2011 model. In addition, Honda plans to squeeze a little more fuel efficiency out of the SUV with a new transmission, saying it will boast the highest EPA-estimated mileage of any three-row crossover. The old five-speed automatic gearbox has been replaced with six-speed unit for 2012.
Honda is throwing in a few interior updates as well. Buyers will be able to enjoy a slightly massaged cabin, complete with an updated navigation system and stereo to match. Finally, new paint colors and wheel options will round out the changes.
In addition to the revised Pilot, Honda has also added a new Sport model to its familiar Ridgeline for 2012. Above the Ridgeline RT standard features, the Sport will get exclusive black 18-inch alloy wheels, black honeycomb grille, standard fog lights, black headlight and brake light housings, and black mirrors and door handles. The 2012 Ridgeline goes on sale November 2011; the Pilot a few months earlier.

Hyundai is taking a shot at General Motors and OnStar by announcing that every 2012 Sonata will come with the company's Blue Link system as standard equipment. In addition to providing a direct connection to emergency services in the event of an accident, Blue Link also delivers traffic and weather updates and allows owners easy access to roadside assistance. Buyers can also pair their smartphones with Blue Link to help locate their vehicle in a crowded parking lot or to play Big Brother to their children. The system can keep track of where the vehicle is being driven and how fast it's going.
Hyundai has also managed to eek a little more efficiency from the sedan. The base 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is now good for 24 miles per gallon – a gain of 2 mpg – in the city and 35 mpg on the highway, and models equipped with the company's 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder now net 22 mpg and 34 mpg highway, up from 33 mpg highway in last year's car. The Korean automaker says that the small changes mean that the Sonata now leads all mid-sized sedans in fuel economy, excluding hybrids. Hit the jump for the press blast.

The crew at Inside Line reports that Hyundai is planning to unveil a new coupe version of its Elantra at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show. The two-door compact would help the 40-mile-per-gallon Elantra compete more effectively against the rival Honda Civic, and as IL points out, the vehicle would also set the stage for an R-Spec offering, as well.
According to the whispers kicking around the web, Hyundai may show off a high-horsepower Elantra Coupe later down the line that packs a 208 horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder, but at first, buyers can expect the same 1.8-liter naturally aspirated four-pot found in the current Elantra Sedan to show up under the hood. Still, that engine delivers 148 horsepower and 131 pound-feet of torque. Those numbers beat out the Civic by 8 hp and 3 lb-ft of torque while delivering better fuel economy.

Porsche has announced a factory tuned version of Cayman S called Black Edition. The special edition will be limited to just 500 units, which will boast extreme performance and superb specification.
Cayman S Black Edition is powered by a 3.4 litre six-cylinder boxer engine with 330PS (243 kW) at 7400RPM and 370Nm (274 lb-ft) of torque at 4750RPM. The acceleration is brutal – 0 to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds with 6-speed manual and 5.0 seconds flat with the optional PDK gearbox. However, with the launch control, which will be available with the Sport Chrono package, the time is dropped to just 4.8 seconds. The top speed is 279 km/h (173 mph) with manual gearbox and 277 km/h (172 mph) with the PDK.
Cayman S Black Edition stands on 19” wheels fitted with 235/35 ZR 19 at the front and 265/35 ZR 19 at the rear. The wheels are half an inch wider than the regular 18” alloys.
The car is superbly well equipped. It features Bi-Xenon headlights with dynamic cornering lights and LED daytime running lights, automatic anti-dazzle interior and exterior mirrors with integrated rain sensor, black partial leather seats with Porsche crest on the headrests, climate control, Sport Design steering wheel and cruise control.
The dashboards is black as well as the gear lever and instrument dials. The interior also boasts door entry guards emblazoned with the lettering “Black Edition” made of stainless steel, Sound Package Plus.
The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) controls the navigation
module and universal audio interface (AUX, USB, iPod).

A few weeks ago we saw the first purported leaked stats on Porsche's uber-GT3, the RS 4.0, and about ten days ago, an image followed via the same enthusiast forum. Today there are yet more details on the car making the rounds. We can't verify the authenticity of the information or the images, but they certainly look legit.
Sporting little canards along its front fascia and a larger rear wing than the standard GT3, the RS 4.0 is supposed to be the ultimate send-off to the current 997-generation car before the whole 911 range replaced with the upcoming 991.
The GT3 RS 4.0 will also purportedly include painted carbon fiber hood and trunk panels, riveted RSR-style widened front and rear wheel arches, no choice of PDK dual-clutch gearbox, and an 8,500-rpm rev limit.
The leaked option sheet reads like a GT3 RS shopper's wish list--aside from the price. Starting at 149,990 euros, or $217,350 translated to 'Merican greenbacks (a process that's not always so direct in practice), it's a pricey purchase. But it may justify the expense.

TOKYO - Shares of major Asian automakers took a beating Thursday after they reported dismal September sales figures in the U.S., their most important overseas market. ADVERTISEMENT

Overall U.S. auto sales plunged last month, dropping below 1 million for the first time in more than 15 years as some consumers struggled to get car loans and others stay away from showrooms amid bank failures and Wall Street turmoil.

Sales at every major U.S. and foreign brand fell at least 24 percent from the previous year, with the exception of General Motors, which said it sold 16 percent fewer vehicles.

The news sent Japanese and South Korean auto issues broadly lower Thursday and weighed on broader market sentiment.

Shares of Toyota Motor Corp. tumbled 3.4 percent to 4,310 yen after Japan's top automaker posted a 32 percent drop in U.S. sales last month. Although the company's fuel-efficient offerings led to strong sales earlier this year, it too has faltered amid a broad downturn in the U.S. car market.

"Toyota is not immune to the economic cycle that is affecting the entire industry in the United States," said Toyota spokesman Paul Nolasco.

The company has no plans at this point to further revise down its 2008 global sales goal of 9.5 million units, Nolasco said. Faced with a sharp U.S. slowdown, Toyota reduced the figure this summer from an initial 9.85 million units.

Meanwhile, shares of Honda Motor Co. shed 4.5 percent to 3,000 yen after saying its U.S. sales fell 24 percent in September. Powered by its lineup of small cars, Honda had been one of the few automakers that had posted sales growth through August.

Nissan Motor Co., whose U.S. sales plummeted 37 percent, declined 4 percent to 668 yen.

The fall in auto stocks was far steeper than the overall market. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index was closed down 1.9 percent at 11,154.76.

In Seoul, shares of top Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Co. slipped 0.9 percent. The company said Wednesday that its sold 25 percent fewer cars in the U.S. in September than a year earlier.

"As consumers tighten their spending due to the uncertain economic times we are experiencing, we are certainly feeling the pinch, as I am sure every other manufacturer is," said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America's vice president of national sales, in a statement.

BEIJING–High, wide and fuel-hungry, the gleaming black Cadillac Escalade on display at the Beijing auto show is an unlikely car for an era of record oil prices.

But while sport utility vehicle sales in the U.S. are tumbling, automakers are finding that for China's newly prosperous car buyers, bigger is still better.

So General Motors Corp. has made the Escalade a star of its auto-show display and is eager to get it on the market here.

"If you look at the fastest-growing market segments in China, there are two – SUVs and luxury cars," said Joseph Y.H. Liu, GM China's vice-president for sales and marketing.

Auto sales in China are booming, with analysts and automakers forecasting growth at 15-20 per cent this year. But demand for the biggest vehicles is even stronger, with sales of luxury cars and SUVs expected to surge by 40-45 per cent.

The phenomenon is welcome news for automakers seeing little or no growth in the United States, Europe and Japan. They also make fatter profits from sales of high-end vehicles than from economy models.

Sales have been boosted by economic growth that has topped 10 per cent for five straight years and a surge in real estate and stock prices that created a new crop of Chinese billionaires.

Buyers of land yachts have also been unintended beneficiaries of a government policy meant to help the poor. Beijing has tried to shield farmers and the urban poor from high oil prices by freezing pump prices for gasoline and diesel, keeping them among the world's lowest. That takes the sting out of filling up a gas guzzler.

Gas costs 5.34 yuan (76 cents U.S.) a litre. State oil companies are barred from passing on rising crude costs to consumers, instead covering their losses out of profits from their drilling units.

Both foreign and Chinese automakers are using the Beijing show to highlight luxury sedans, muscle cars and SUVs. It opens to the public Thursday after a weekend press preview.

Somehow its never quite managed to capture the publics imagination despite being one of the most technically accomplished cars in its class. Technical accomplishment clearly only gets you so far. Add to that a DVD-based satellite navigation system and Volvos clever Personal Car Communicator with keyless drive and youll have more than enough buttons to press to enable you to find new functions months after you think youve got these systems taped. In addition, buyers also receive active bi-xenon headlights, heated front and rear seats, heated windscreen washer nozzles, front and rear park assist and a rear seat audio console with a pair of headphone sockets. Its a spec list that makes any of its comparatively-priced rivals look rather basic.

If that were the sum total of the Executives goodies, it would still raise a few eyebrows but theres more. A lot more. The Executive is identifiable from the outside by its unique 18-inch alloy wheels and chrome sections on the lower air intake, fog light trims, door mouldings and rear lights. Dont try to full beam an S80 Executive in other words as it has enough chrome to return the favour.

Inside, theres soft leather upholstery thats swathed across the door inserts and armrests with contrasting stitching and piping, while rear seat passengers get a very special touch a refrigerator in the centre armrest with Swedish crystal Kosta Boda tumblers. As you can see, this is no matsnflaps lash up. Some serious thought has gone into this model. Theres a walnut wood framed centre console with contrasting aluminium inlays and a walnut and leather gear knob.

Thatll do as far as specification goes. Lets take a look at the engines. Three powerplants are offered, a diesel and two punchy petrols. With a 315bhp V8 four-wheel drive flagship model on offer, Volvo has really upped the ante but elsewhere there are more accessible attractions with the option of all-wheel-drive that also catch the eye.

My tip would be to stretch to the all-wheel drive models as they really add another dimension in winter traction.

Safety technology for the S80 includes active safety systems such as Collision Warning and Brake Support with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and a patented body structure developed at the Volvo Safety Centre. The S80 includes an optional key fob offering 'keyless drive' and incorporating a world first innovation the Personal Car Communicator (PCC). This system features intelligent technology to remotely check if the car is locked or not then alert you if the alarm has been activated along with a heartbeat sensor which warns if there is anyone in the car. Another interesting technology is the Collision Warning system which alerts the driver, via a 'heads-up' warning display on the windscreen plus audible buzzer, if the gap to the car in front closes so fast that a collision is likely, while the Brake Support system boosts the braking force to ensure braking is as effective as possible. The active Bi-Xenon headlights turn the beam of the headlights in the direction the steering wheel is being turned, allowing better visibility deeper into corners at night and also helping to highlight the immediate verge where a pedestrian, cyclist or parked vehicle could be obscured. The S80 Executive faces a tough task toppling the established favourites in this sector and anybody with an ounce of financial savvy will know that expensive gadgets do very little to prop up a cars residual values a few years down the line. Cars can't be sexy, he said emphatically. Machines are not sexy. They can be sleek, powerful and anything else, but not sexy.

Oh, how I disagree.

The Corvette ZR1 is sex on burning wheels.

The Dodge Challenger is sweaty sexy.

The BMW M3 is European sexy.

Big beefcake engines have it. So do high revving turbo charged, super charged kind of machines.

Some times its bulging muscles, sometimes it's just the way the car looks parked. But there's definitely a look about a car that emits that denotes sex appeal. The Jaguar XKR convertible has that look. So does the Honda S2000, though that's more of the librarian kind of sex appeal. The Mazda6, which I think was the story that provoked the call, is sexy, especially when you look what it stacks up against.

But the caller, who didn't give his name, said none of those vehicles has any sex in their appeal. They just can't, sex is between a man and a woman and all of us critics are just using cheap writing techniques to get more readers. We're being gratuitous.

Of course, I do agree there are lots of cars with zero sex appeal. Pick your subcompact, and there's nothing arousing about it.

The year is 2058. Much has changed in the automotive industry in the last 50 years as a result of safety, security and environmental requirements and the evolution of technology and law. Energy policy, oil prices, geopolitics, the global economy and consumer behavior all over the world have had serious implications for the auto industry--and for drivers.

What has happened to automotive enthusiasm? What has become of the Car Guy?

As AutoWeek celebrates its first 50 years and looks ahead to the next 50, we asked Dr. Sheila Ronis--director of the MBA program and the Master of Science in Strategic Leadership degree at Walsh College, who chairs a group being asked to write the next National Security Act--to give us her predictions.

Here is her view of how the future just might unfold.

Today, in 2058, almost all vehicles are ultragreen and electric. No internal-combustion engines have been built anywhere on the planet for a couple of decades. Cars that already had them now require a box retrofitted to the exhaust that keeps pollution from fouling the air. Cars use many different energy sources to run their electric powertrains; hybrid electrics that plug into the energy grid let Americans get the equivalent of hundreds of miles to the gallon of gasoline, but most of them aren't burning gasoline.

Smart vehicles talk to the roads and to other vehicles, and the roads and other vehicles talk back. All cities are networked--vehicles as well as residences. Almost all homes use fuel cells partially powered by solar panels and their own wind turbines. That's why, as Americans plug their daily drivers into the electrical grid, the national system doesn't crash.

All vehicles built today use drive-by-wire technology. In fact, federal and state officials passed regulations that make it against the law to drive, except in emergencies. For this reason, and thanks to intelligent highway systems, motor-vehicle accidents are extremely rare. Computers monitor navigation, engine controls, HVAC and steering, and the task of motoring is more carefree than ever.

But don't think people don't love their cars. They do. Today's vehicles have personalities; most owners have taken to giving them names. (Dan calls his "Mario.") Exterior skins are made of new materials that breathe, repel the elements and keep snow and ice from forming on the windows. Based on how you might feel or what your needs might be, hydrogen skate chassis are frequently married to many different body types and styles.

It's just that simple.

This convergence of technologies really started to gather momentum at the end of the first decade in the 21st century. That was when the National Security Act of 2010 brought energy independence into the U.S. national security equation. Before that, military capability was considered paramount to national security; after the new act, however, it was defined as the integration of all of the elements of national power--economic, political, military and diplomatic--to support American interests, people and property around the world. Also with the new act, the economic element and the systems nature of national security began to be better understood, including the need for energy independence.

Americans' love affairs with their cars, their SUVs and their internal-combustion engines were seriously stressed. As the price of oil began to climb, many asked, "When will the alternative-fuel vehicles and their infrastructures be ready?" Hubbert's peak oil theory, which described the availability of oil, was proven valid when production failed to keep up with spiraling global demand. (M.
